What is mileage tax relief?

If you have to travel as a part of your job, you could be entitled to claim your mileage costs back from HMRC. Even if your employer gives you some mileage allowance, if it is less than the HMRC approved mileage allowance then you can claim for the shortfall.

Who is entitled to claim mileage tax relief?

If you use your own vehicle for work purposes you could be entitled to tax relief to help you with those costs. HMRC set specific rules about what kind of journeys are eligible for tax relief. If your only travel is to and from your permanent place of work then unfortunately you are not entitled to claim any tax relief. HMRC see that as an acceptable employment expense. However, if you are travelling to a temporary workplace (and HMRC define that as one you are based at for less than 24 months) then you could be entitled to mileage tax relief on your travel costs. Similarly, if you use your own vehicle to visit clients or suppliers then you could be entitled to claim tax relief on your mileage.

If your employer makes some contribution to your travel costs but this contribution is less than the HMRC approved mileage amount, then you can claim the difference. HMRC mileage rates are currently set at 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles and 25p per mile above that.

There are different rules if you have a company car and we deal with those in a separate guide – here we are only concerned with mileage tax relief using your own vehicle.
