Being late with your tax return can mean fines or penalties! Our team of tax experts at DSR Tax Refunds don’t want that to happen to you, so check out our helpful guide to tax return deadlines. We aim to take the hassle out of your taxes so we have gathered all of the information you need to know here. You could also check out our handy online calculator and see if you are due a tax refund and if so, call our friendly team on 0330 122 9972 and let’s get started.

What are the important dates you need to know?

Get these marked on your calendar and you won’t go wrong with your taxes.

31st of January

Mark this one in red!! This is the deadline for filing your self-assessment tax return for the previous tax year and pay any tax that you owe to HMRC.

If you make payments on account for the following tax year, this is the date to make your first payment.

5th of April

The end of the tax year. HMRC will contact you after this date to ask you to file your self-assessment tax return.

31st of July

If you make payments on account, your second one is due on this date.

31st of October

If you send in paper self-assessment forms, then this is the date they need to be in by. You have until 31st of January if you are using the online system though.

It is really important that you get your returns filed on time and that you make any payments requested by HMRC on time. HMRC will issue penalties for late returns and payments. However, if you have a good reason to have missed the deadline, HMRC might be lenient with you but they will expect full cooperation from you. Burying your head in the sand is a really bad idea.

If you need to register for VAT, you do that separately to your self-assessment tax return.
