Does your employer have to give you a payslip?

If you are employed, your employer must give you a payslip by law. This payslip can be used as proof of your income as well as the amount of tax you have paid on your earnings and any pension contributions you have made. It is your employer’s choice whether these payslips are provided electronically (online) or in paper form. They must be provided either on your payday or before.

You are entitled to a payslip by law, unless you are one of the following:

  • Not an employee, for example if you are a contractor, freelancer or ‘worker’
  • In the police service
  • A merchant seaman
  • A master or crew member working in share fishing (which means that instead of getting wages, you are paid by a share in the profits or gross earnings of a fishing vessel).

What information should be on your payslip?

By law, your payslip should show the following information:

  • How much you have earned, before and after any deductions for National Insurance and Income Tax
  • The amount of any deductions from your earnings that could change each time you are paid, such as National Insurance or Income Tax.

If you have any fixed deductions, such as repayment for a season ticket loan, these must be explained by your employer – either on your payslip or in a separate written statement. If it is explained in a separate written statement, it must be sent before the first payslip and must be updated each tax year.
