How can you find a lost National Insurance number?

Considering that it is something you receive in the post around your 16th birthday, it is no wonder that sometimes people find that they have lost their National Insurance number or can’t remember what it is. It is possible to find it though – either through checking through your own documents or by contacting HMRC.

Your National Insurance number will be shown on such things as your payslips, P60 or any letters you may have received about pension, taxes or benefits so you should be able to find out what it is from these sources. Similarly, if you have a personal tax account on the Government Gateway site, you can log on and find out what it is there.

However, if you still can’t find it, you can contact HMRC and they will let you know what it is. You can either fill in form CA5403 (either online or through the post) or you can call the National Insurance numbers helpline – if you choose this option, you will have to answer some security questions and if you can’t answer them, you will need to apply through the post.

HMRC won’t tell you your National Insurance number over the phone but they will send it to you through the post – you should receive it within 10 working days.

The helpline numbers are:

The opening times are 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 4pm on Saturday.
