What do you need to do if you provide free coal?
If you are an employer with employees in the coal mining industry and you provide your mining staff with free coal, you don’t need to report this benefit to HMRC nor pay any additional tax or National Insurance on the coal. These guidelines state that you are allowed to give your miners a reasonable amount of free coal, or payments in place of free coal.
Although these guidelines apply to anyone working in your colliery, it doesn’t apply to anyone in a technical, clerical or administrative role. It only applies to those working directly in the mining operation.
