How do HMRC treat providing bicycles for employees?
Due to their environmentally friendly nature as well as their role in reducing traffic congestion, the government are keen to encourage bicycle use above other forms of transport. This is good news if you provide bikes for your employees as they aren’t classed as an expense or benefit if you lend or hire them to your employees, as long as they are available to all employees and are mainly used for getting to work.
This means that they don’t have to be reported to HMRC, nor do you need to pay any tax or National Insurance on them. Because of this, it is easier for you to set up a ‘cycle to work’ scheme to encourage your employees to commute to work by bike rather than other forms of transport.
